Mahalo!

Written May 31st, 2007 by Paul in General

I like it. I really like it.

Jason Calacanis launched Mahalo.com, his hush-hush new project yesterday, in a style only Jason can.

I won’t pass judgement except to say that I love simple, uncluttered interfaces and quickly being able to find what I’m looking for, even though the search results are sparse on the long tail right now…

…and his site is nowhere near being similar to the project I’m working on. Phew! Wouldn’t want to be accused of being a copycat.

I expected something much different but I do like what I see. Nice work Jason!

    GOOD GOD!
I certainly hope you don’t plan to emulate Mahalo.com… NOT that it isn’t a marvelous concept and surprisingly effective, but I sure don’t envy Jason’s decision to take on all that labour!
He’s really going to have to be all over things like broken links, misinformation, and just sheer VOLUME that although I don’t envy his challenges, I’m sure I’ll visit often.

    Hi Lisa,

He has major funding and a staff of about 40 editors behind the site right now. Still a big workload though. Reminds me of Yahoo! back in 1999, except with more user input and interaction.

    Mahalo for the feedback Paul!

We’ve got a ton of work ahead of us, but give us time and you’ll see the 4,000 pages turn to 10,000, and maybe even 25,000 over the next couple of years.

In terms of the design I can’t take any credit for it… it’s all Jon Hicks–the best designer on the planet for my money!

Jason, I just watched the video intervew you did with Loic here (and on his blog here) and NOW I see where you’re going with it. Totally brought things into perspective.

I also loved the bit about how to get mentioned on Valleywag. That was classic! LOL!

P.S. Would you believe I understood the French lead-in in the video? It’s the bilingual Canadian thing I guess…
